Intermediate November 2023 Unit 2 Q8
8. In this question, you will be assessed on the quality of your organisation, communication and accuracy in writing.
The shape below has a total length of 35 cm.
The shape is cut into three parts, A, B and C.

Diagram not drawn to scale
The length of A is \(\dfrac{2}{5}\) of the total length of the shape.
The lengths of B and C are in the ratio 1 : 6.
Find the length of each part of the shape.
You must show all your working. [4 + 2 OCW]
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| (Length of A = 35 cm ÷ 5 × 2 = ) 14 (cm) | B1 | Check diagram for answers. Not from incorrect working. |
| (Total length of B and C = 35 – 14 = ) 21 (cm) | B1 | FT 35 – ‘their 14’. Not from incorrect working. |
| (Length of B =) 21 ÷ (1 + 6) OR (Length of C =) 21 ÷ (1 + 6) × 6 | M1 | Strict FT ‘their 21’ (including 35 and 14) ÷ 7 |
| (Length of B =) 3 (cm) AND (Length of C =) 18 (cm) | A1 | Sight of 3 or 18 implies M. FT ‘their 21’ ÷ 7 × 6. Penalise -1 only once if their A, B or C labelled incorrectly. |
| Organisation and Communication. | OC1 | For OC1, candidates will be expected to:
|
| Accuracy of writing. | W1 | For W1, candidates will be expected to:
|
8. Alternative method
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| (Total length of B and C = 35 cm ÷ 5 × 3 = ) 21 (cm) | B1 | Check diagram for answers. Not from incorrect working. |
| (Length of A = 35 – 21 = ) 14 (cm) | B1 | Not from incorrect working. FT 35 – ‘their 21’ |
| (Length of B =) 21 ÷ (1 + 6) OR (Length of C =) 21 ÷ (1 + 6) × 6 | M1 | Strict FT ‘their 21’ (including 35 and 14) ÷ 7 |
| (Length of B =) 3 (cm) AND (Length of C =) 18 (cm) | A1 | Sight of 3 or 18 implies M1 FT ‘their 21’ ÷ 7 × 6. Penalise -1 only once if their A, B or C labelled incorrectly. |
In the original mark scheme the OC1 and W1 rows follow the alternative method; they apply to either method.
Corrected by Westie's Workshop
- The board's mark scheme printed “Strict FT ‘their 14’ (including 35 and 14) ÷ 7”. Changed to “Strict FT ‘their 21’ (including 35 and 14) ÷ 7” because in this method it is the total for B and C (21) that is divided by 7, as in the line below and in the main method.
