Numeracy Intermediate November 2021 Unit 2 Q3
3.
Liam is following a recipe to make Welsh Cakes.
He places flour, butter and sugar in a mixing bowl.
These three ingredients have a total mass of 1920 g.
He checks the recipe and finds that:
- the mass of sugar is \(\dfrac{3}{16}\) of the total mass of these three ingredients,
- for every 90 g of sugar he needs to add one egg and 50 g of sultanas.
Calculate the number of eggs and the mass of sultanas that Liam needs to make his Welsh Cakes. [4]
Number of eggs ……………
Mass of sultanas …………… g
Serena is making a sauce.
The mass of flour Serena has in her mixing bowl is double the mass of butter.
The total mass of flour and butter is 852 g.
Calculate the mass of the flour in Serena’s mixing bowl. [2]
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| (Mass of sugar =) 1920 × 3 ÷ 16 or \(\dfrac{3}{16}\) × 1920 | M1 | Or 0.1875 × 1920 |
| 360 (g) | A1 | |
| (Number of eggs = 360 ÷ 90 =) 4 | B1 | Do not accept from incorrect working FT ‘their derived 360’ ÷ 90, rounded or truncated to a whole number of eggs |
| (Mass of sultanas = 360 ÷ 90 × 50 =) 200 (g) | B1 | FT ‘their derived 360’ ÷ 90 or FT ‘their 4’ × 50 provided ‘their 4’ ≠ 1 |

|---|---|---|
| 852 × 2 ÷ 3 or \(\dfrac{2}{3}\) × 852 | M1 | |
| 568 (g) | A1 | Mark final answer Allow M1 A0 for sight of 568(g) followed by additional working, e.g. 852 – 568 = 284(g) |
