18 Machine A and machine B both make car parts.
Machine A makes 6 parts every 10 minutes.
Machine B makes 13 parts every 15 minutes.
On Monday
machine A makes parts for 12 hours
machine B makes parts for 10 hours
Work out the total number of parts made by the two machines on Monday. (4)
| Answer | Mark | Mark scheme |
|---|---|---|
| 952 | P1 | for starting to work with parts, eg. \(6 \times 60 \div 10\ (= 36)\) or \(10 \div 6\ (= 1.66..)\) or \(6 \div 10\ (= 0.6)\) or \(13 \times 60 \div 15\ (= 52)\) or \(15 \div 13\ (= 1.15..)\) or \(13 \div 15\ (= 0.866..)\) OR for \(60 \div 10 \times 12\ (= 72)\) or \(10 \times 60 \div 15\ (= 40)\) |
| P1 | for a full process to find the number of parts made by machine A eg \(\text{``}36\text{''} \times 12\ (= 432)\) or \(12 \times 60 \div \text{``}1.66..\text{''}\ (= 432)\) or \(12 \times 60 \times \text{``}0.6\text{''}\ (= 432)\) OR \(\text{``}72\text{''} \times 6\ (= 432)\) | |
| P1 | for a full process to find the number of parts made by machine B eg \(\text{``}52\text{''} \times 10\ (= 520)\) or \(10 \times 60 \div \text{``}1.15..\text{''}\ (= 520)\) or \(10 \times 60 \times \text{``}0.866..\text{''}\ (= 520)\) OR \(\text{``}40\text{''} \times 13\ (= 520)\) | |
| A1 | for 952 or 432 and 520 |
