Foundation November 2023 Paper 1 Q24
24 Mano has three shelves of books.
There are \(x\) books on shelf A.
There are \((3x + 1)\) books on shelf B.
There are \((2x - 5)\) books on shelf C.
There is a total of 44 books on the three shelves.
All the books have the same mass.
The books on shelf B have a total mass of 7500 g.
Work out the total mass of the books on shelf A. (5)
| Answer | Mark | Mark scheme |
|---|---|---|
| 2400 | P1 | for setting up an equation in \(x\) eg \(x + (3x + 1) + (2x - 5) = 44\) or \(6x - 4 = 44\) or \(x = 48 \div 6\ (= 8)\) |
| P1 | for substituting “8” into either \((3x + 1)\) or \((2x - 5)\) eg \(3 \times \text{``}8\text{''} + 1\ (= 25)\) or \(2 \times \text{``}8\text{''} - 5\ (= 11)\) | |
| P1 | for finding the mass of one book eg \(7500 \div \text{``}25\text{''}\ (= 300)\) | |
| P1 | for finding the mass of the books on shelf A eg \(\text{``}300\text{''} \times \text{``}8\text{''}\) | |
