For the sequence below, what is the rule for finding the next term?
13, 26, 52, 104, …… [1]
Hannah and Faith are working with the following sequence.
4, 7, 12, 19, 28, ……
Hannah says,
‘The 4th term is \(4^2 + 3\) which is 19. The 5th term is \(5^2 + 3\), which is 28.’
Use Hannah’s method to find the 15th term. [1]
Faith looks at the differences between the terms. She writes,

The difference increases by 2 each time.
Continue Faith’s method to find the 7th term.
You must show all your working. [1]
Hannah and Faith are working out the 100th term.

| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| 73 AND 87 | B1 |
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| ‘multiply the previous term by 2’ | E1 | Accept ‘x2’, ‘double’, ‘multiply by 2’ or equivalent |
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| (i) (\(15^2 + 3\) =) 228 | B1 | |
| (ii) Shows, by considering differences, that the 7th term is 52. e.g. 28 + 11 + 13 = 52 | B1 | |
| (iii) Indicates ‘Hannah’ and explains that working out \(100^2 + 3\) is quicker than repeated addition. | E1 | |
