4MA0 Foundation June 2015 Paper 1R Q4
4 Here is a sequence of patterns made from dots.

(a) In the space below, draw Pattern number 4 (1)
This rule can be used to find the number of dots in a pattern of the sequence.
| Multiply the Pattern number by 3 and then add 2 |
(b) Work out the number of dots in Pattern number 7 (2)
A pattern has exactly 41 dots.
(c) Work out the Pattern number. (2)
\(T\) is the number of dots in Pattern number \(n\).
(d) Write down a formula for \(T\) in terms of \(n\). (3)
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
![]() | B1 |
| (1) |
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
| 7 × 3 + 2 | M1 |
| 23 | A1 |
| (2) |
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
| (41 – 2) ÷ 3 | M1 |
| 13 | A1 |
| (2) |
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
| \(T = 3n + 2\) | B3 |
| (3) | |
| Total 8 marks |
Notes
B3: If not B3 then B2 for \(3n + 2\) or \(T = 3n + k\) (\(k\) may be zero) or \(T = an + 2\) (\(a \neq 0\))
If not B2 then B1 for \(T\) = linear function in \(n\) or \(3n\)
