Foundation June 2022 Paper 1 Q22
22 A cylinder is placed on the ground.

Diagram NOT accurately drawn
The height of the cylinder is 18 cm.
The force exerted by the cylinder on the ground is 72 newtons.
The pressure on the ground due to the cylinder is 1.4 newtons/cm\(^2\)
Work out the volume of the cylinder.
Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures.
(4)
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
| \(1.4 = \dfrac{72}{(\text{area})}\) oe | M1 |
| (area =) \(\dfrac{72}{1.4}\left(= \dfrac{360}{7} = 51.4\ldots\right)\) oe | M1 |
“51.4…” × 18 or \(r = \sqrt{\dfrac{\text{``}{51.4\ldots}\text{''}}{\pi}}\) (= 4.046…) and \(\pi \times \text{``}{4.046}\text{''}^2 \times 18\) | M1 |
| 926 | A1 |

| (4 marks) |
Notes
M1: (51.4 or better)
M1: allow use of \(\pi r^2\) to find the radius and then using \(\pi r^2 h\) to find the volume
A1: Allow 925 – 928
