Higher November 2023 Paper 1 Q3
3. Izaan has a block of stainless steel with volume 700 cm3.
The stainless steel has a density of 7·5 g/cm3.
Izaan says,
“The block has a mass of less than 5 kg.”
Is Izaan correct? [3]
☐ Yes ☐ No ☐ Cannot tell
Show how you decide.
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| \(700\times7.5\) | M1 | |
| 5250 (g) or 5.25 kg AND | A1 | CAO |

Alternative method 1
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| \(\dfrac{5\times1000}{700}\) | M1 | |
| \(7{\cdot}1(\ldots\ \text{g/cm}^3)\) | A1 | CAO |

Alternative method 2
| Scheme | Marks | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| \(\dfrac{5\times1000}{7{\cdot}5}\) | M1 | |
| \(666{\cdot}6(\ldots\ \text{cm}^3)\) or \(666{\cdot}7\ (\text{cm}^3)\) | A1 | CAO |

Corrected by Westie's Workshop
- The board's mark scheme printed “their 5 × 1000 / 700”. Changed to “their 5 × 1000 / 7·5” because this method divides by the density 7·5, not by 700 (the Foundation mark scheme has 7·5 here).
- The board's mark scheme printed “7·1(… cm³)”. Changed to “7·1(… g/cm³)” because 5000 g ÷ 700 cm³ is a density, so the unit is g/cm³.
