IMC 2009 Q8

IMCCurrent spec5 marksArea, Perimeter & Shape

8. The diagram shows a figure made from six equal, touching squares arranged with a vertical line of symmetry. A straight line is drawn through the bottom corner \(P\) in such a way that the area of the figure is halved. Where will the cut cross the edge \(XY\)?

  1. A at \(X\)
  2. B one quarter the way down \(XY\)
  3. C half way down \(XY\)
  4. D three-quarters the way down \(XY\)
  5. E at \(Y\)
Six equal squares stacked symmetrically: three in the bottom row, two in the middle row and one on top; P is the bottom left corner and XY is the right-hand edge of the middle row
