Foundation November 2024 Paper 2 Q26
26 All the students in year 10 and all the students in year 11 named their favourite science subject from Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The pie chart shows information about the results for the year 10 students.
The table shows information about the results for the year 11 students.
| science subject | number of students |
|---|---|
| Biology | \(3x + 6\) |
| Chemistry | \(5x + 8\) |
| Physics | \(7x - 9\) |
Table for year 11
There are 300 students in year 10
There are 320 students in year 11
More students in year 10 than in year 11 said Biology was their favourite science subject.
How many more?
(5)
| Scheme | Marks |
|---|---|
| \(3x + 6 + 5x + 8 + 7x - 9 = 320\) oe eg \(15x + 5 = 320\) Could be implied by (320 – 5) ÷ 15 oe | M1 |
| (\(x\) =) 21 or (\(3x\) =) 63 Correct answer of 21 or 63 scores 2 marks (unless from obvious incorrect working) | A1 |
| 3 × “their 21” + 6 (= 69) or “their 63” + 6 (= 69) Look for 69 by the side of the table | M1ft |
\(\dfrac{126}{360} \times 300\;(= 105)\) oe eg \(\dfrac{300}{360}\left(= \dfrac{5}{6}\right)\) and \(\dfrac{5}{6} \times 126\;(= 105)\) or \(\dfrac{360}{300} = 1.2\) and 126 ÷ 1.2 (= 105) oe | M1 |
| dependent on a seeing 21 or 63 Answer: 36 | A1 |
| (5) | |
| (5 marks) |
Notes
M1: a correct method to find the correct value of \(x\) for year 11 students eg an equation
A1: For the correct value for \(x\) or \(3x\)
M1ft: dep on M1
a correct method to find the number for year 11 Biology
ft their value of \(x\) as long as only one value of \(x\) is offered and it is a clear intention to be \(x\)
A1: cao dep on A1 previously scored
